Memorials may be directed to the Humane Society of Branch County, the Branch County Veterans Affairs Organization, or the Quincy Historical Society. Immediately following the service, a luncheon will be provided at the family’s home in Quincy. A graveside memorial service will be held for family and friends at 1 PM on Saturday, Jat Lakeview Cemetery in Quincy. According to his wishes, cremation has taken place. Thom always made room in his busy life to spend time with his family and friends. In the last few years, he enjoyed spending time at his camper on Honey Lake. He loved travelling camping and visiting his high school classmates. Thom had a passion for Rose of Sharon bushes and planted them wherever he lived and in his friends and neighbor’s yards. One of his many hobbies was dog grooming which he operated from his home in Quincy for many years. He served on the Quincy Village Council, the Quincy Fire Department, and the Quincy Police Reserves, and assisted coaching football at Quincy High School. Thom worked at Bundy Tubing and the Coldwater Health Center before his retirement. He was preceded in death by his parents and several aunts and uncles. In addition to his children Krista (Cliff) Thorne of Coldwater, Ashley (Michael) Heckly of Fishers, IN, and Stacy Lincoln of California, and his wife Karen, Thom is survived by his brother Steve (Nancy) Brainard of Lansing, MI, his grandchildren Sam and Heidi Thorne of Coldwater and Cole Heckly of Fishers, IN, his aunts Mary DeCoste of Spring Arbor, and Joyce Millhouse of Stockbridge, his step-daughter Kathy Hyska of Bronson, and his long-time “special mother” Barbara Hefner-Parks (Roscoe) of Coldwater. Later he married Vicky Sitzes and together they had Ashley and Stacy. Earlier in his life, after his military service, he married Sandra Hefner and they had Krista. On October 16, 2015, he married Karen (Diffenbaugh) Hargreave in Quincy, MI. While in the service, he received the good conduct and marksmen medals. After training, he was stationed in the States and Germany and served his country until 1969. Thom graduated from Stockbridge High School, Stockbridge, MI in 1966 and enlisted in the Army. Thom was born to Harold and Maxine (Millhouse) Brainard at Rowe Memorial Hospital in Stockbridge, MI on November 15, 1947.
